Psyche D / EvH, commission for a house in Bristol
There's often a serendipitous aspect to the work, that can manifest in really unexpected ways. So it was with this lovely opportunity to produce three works for a spectacular home here in Bristol.
The owner invited me round to view the project, maybe halfway into a major refurbishment, including a new build kitchen extension and total refit of the original rooms. He wanted to discuss ideas for new artworks for the property, that would be specifically tailored to fit particular locations really well, using Pinterest to create themed boards to consider the look and feel of each room, an idea that seems to work really well, perhaps especially in terms of considering how light or dark a particular space is going to be.
The minute I walked into the double-height atrium at the front of the house, I knew straight away that there was a fabulous opportunity to create an ultra-tall piece that would span both levels, with views from the glazed walkway, as well as from the centrally located entrance hall on the ground floor.
Having cut Motorik / TWO into 9 pieces previously, it was a relatively small further leap to chop it into 27 pieces and stack them in a new rhythm, at around 4.8m high. Additionally, I produced a Psyche D / EvH piece for the sitting room, to go over the mantelpiece, between a pair of beautiful bespoke bookcases, and made a huge Vox linea piece for the stairwell. At 2.4m high it fills the space with reflected light, line and colour, although it's impossible to get far enough back to really capture the effect in a single photo.
As ever, my working method involves taking photos on site, and then creating photomontages combining the best of these views with images of the work in situ, creating variations for size, position, framing and colour palettes. The resulting Jpeg sketches allow for more informed decisions to be made, in order to commission bespoke works that fit their specific locations perfectly.
