Commission for a house in Clifton

It’s always a pleasure to be asked to create bespoke pieces for someone’s home. In this case, a collector based here in Bristol commissioned me to produce a series of works as part of a renovation led by Giles Hicks of Liveable Interiors, who had been brought in to reimagine both the layout and visual feel of the space.

The property is a classic Georgian townhouse nestled in the heart of Clifton, with beautifully proportioned, high-ceilinged living spaces that open off a grand stairwell rising through the centre of the building. It’s the kind of architecture that naturally invites thoughtful, well-balanced contemporary interior design and artwork.

I was asked to create three pieces for the main living area. After several rounds of sketches and consultation, the client selected one of my Spiral Scratch works to feature on the wall opposite the chimney breast, along with a pair of Wave pieces with bespoke colour palettes to hang either side of the fireplace and a Lino / bronzed tondo for the stairwell. Once we had finalised scale and colour, I brought in Josh Smith of J M Smith Framing to build minimal open tray frames. These were finished with a slim wooden edge, hand-painted in a semi-transparent soft white to let the natural timber grain show through.

The artworks were then Diasec mounted to clear Optima Plexiglass by Genesis in London, my go-to team for over twenty years. Their mount technique provides a beautiful, low reflection finish that brings out the vibrancy of the colours, allowing the pieces to settle elegantly into the space.

It’s always rewarding to be involved in a project from the early concept stages, it means we can help to develop a tailored solution that responds directly to the home and its character. Hopefully, it adds something extra that resonates with the owner and enhances the experience of living in the space as well.
